Trying to understand what Catholics believe and clear on how things work in the Church.
When you go to confession, is it God forgiving you with the Priest as His guide or does the
Priest forgive you in God's stead?
Lets imagine that you are somewhere cut off from any chance of seeing a Priest and you fear you
are about to die..... and you know you have some sins, can you Pray to God directly and get forgiveness
directly?
My husband wants to convert to Catholicism and we have a bit of an argument about how confession works.

Yes.
The Church's teaching about confession (or reconciliation, as it's more frequently called now) is neither unreasonable nor cruel. An act of perfect contrition suffices. Should you survive the peril, a meeting with a priest is in order.
God forgives sins. He is the Father of mecies. The priest absolves. The forgiveness comes from above. The priest himself goes (-or should go) to confession regularly. (And in case you've ever wondered, a priest cannot absolve himself, nor may he absolve anyone whose sin he was a party to. For example, if a priest slept with a congregant, he could neither absolve her--or him, as the case may be--or himself.) -

Re: Confession Question
Fri, December 15, 2006 - 4:29 PMwelcome to your husband C!
here's what the Church teaches about the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession:

answers to many questions about the Church/faith you and your husband have can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. it's like a reference guide - you can look up a topic and find out what the Church teaches about it and why.
here's a link to the full version online:
